Savings and cash

Zakat al-maal on savings and cash

The simplest line in the sum, and the one most people start with.

Zakat al-maal on savings

Every balance counts at its value on your zakat day: cash at home, current and savings accounts, cash ISAs and money in apps. Interest is a separate question, not part of the sum.

See the nisab for 2027 in pounds, on gold and on silver.

Savings worked out for zakat al-maal

Line Amount
Cash at home £300
Current account £1,700
Cash ISA £4,000
Total £6,000
Zakat at 2.5% £150

Over the silver nisab of £881.80 on 8 October 2026, so due after a lunar year (Sunan Ibn Majah 1792).

Three things to check

Held a year?

The sum must have stayed at or above the nisab for a lunar year (Sunan Ibn Majah 1792).

Which nisab?

Silver or gold, from one hadith (Sunan Abi Dawud 1573). Many use the lower silver figure for cash.

Money set aside

Savings for a wedding or a deposit still count until they are spent.
