Quran 9:60
Who receives zakat al-maal
The Quran names the eight groups who may receive it.
Who receives zakat al-maal
The Quran names eight groups, and zakat goes to them alone (Quran 9:60). Zakat is taken from the wealthy and given to their poor (Sahih al-Bukhari 1395).
Work out your zakat first, then see where every pound of it goes.
The eight groups of Quran 9:60
| Group | Who they are |
|---|---|
| The poor | Those with little or nothing |
| The needy | Those who cannot meet their needs |
| Those who collect it | The people who gather and pass it on |
| Hearts brought together | Those whose hearts are to be won |
| Freeing captives | Freeing people held in bondage |
| Those in debt | People who cannot pay what they owe |
| In the cause of Allah | As each school defines it |
| The stranded traveller | Someone cut off from their money |
All eight are named in Quran 9:60.
Giving it yourself or through others
You can hand it to people in need yourself or give it through an organisation that keeps a separate zakat fund. Zakat Charity Guide explains how to check one.
